3.       What are cookies?

3.1.    Cookies are small text files sent by websites to the device used for browsing (computer, tablet, smartphone, etc.) where they are stored to be retransmitted to the same website upon the user's next visit.

3.2.    Cookies are classified based on the domain of the website from which they originate and their purposes. Regarding the domain of origin, they are distinguished into first-party or third-party cookies, where “first-party cookies” refers to cookies that have the website consulted by the user as their domain, while “third-party cookies” refers to cookies that relate to external domains that install their own cookies through the website consulted by the user.

3.3.    Regarding the purpose of use, cookies can be technical or profiling:

3.3.1. technical cookies: used by websites for the sole purpose of carrying out the transmission of a communication over an electronic communications network (e.g., sending a message and/or a signal) or to the extent strictly necessary for the website to provide a service explicitly requested by the user. Technical cookies can be divided into:

3.3.1.1.    browsing or session cookies, which ensure normal navigation and use of the website (allowing, for example, to make a purchase or authenticate to access restricted areas);

3.3.1.2.    anonymous analytical cookies, which allow for the production of aggregate statistics and are assimilated to technical cookies where the possibility—including through tools suitable for reducing the identification power of the cookies themselves—that their use leads to the direct identification of the user is precluded. Third-party analytical cookies are likewise assimilable to technical cookies if the third party, in addition to adopting tools suitable for reducing the identification power of the cookies themselves, contractually undertakes not to cross-reference the information contained in the cookies with other information it already possesses and not to transmit them in turn to further third parties;

3.3.1.3.    functional cookies, which allow the user to browse according to a series of selected criteria (for example, language, products selected for purchase) in order to improve the service provided to the same;

3.3.2. profiling cookies: used to link specific actions or recurring behavioral patterns in the use of the offered functionalities to specific, identified, or identifiable subjects, for the purpose of grouping the different profiles within homogeneous clusters of different sizes, so that the data controller is able, among other things, to also modulate the provision of the service in an increasingly personalized manner beyond what is strictly necessary for the delivery of the service, as well as to send targeted advertising messages, i.e., in line with the preferences expressed by the User while browsing the site.
